I find AI indispensable for research when writing. The availability of information at science-fiction speed is a convenience I would have appreciated when I began writing Parallels a few years ago and only Google Search was available to me. (Not that Google, Wikipedia, etc., aren’t awesome resources, but AI cites them and other references at the bottom of its summaries. When in doubt, I always check those references, but sometimes I just need AI to refresh me on a date, place, name or spelling that I still half-remember.)
Convenience at a Price
The price, we’re told, is potentially huge. In the split-second it takes AI to find the information I requested and formulate a reply—usually in perfect English—it had to locate the sources, find the searched-for item, write it up and display it, how much energy was consumed, and how many gallons of water were needed to cool the giant processors in those massive data centers? Often, the neatly packaged response includes a helpful offer of further information based on my initial query. I feel like royalty, but I want to know the cost beyond my WiFi subscription.
To find an answer, I posed a Jeopardy-type question to AI: “Who was Pontiac, MI, named for?” The answer came in about half a second.

I copied the response to my question and pasted it in the space above. As you can see, AI not only answered the question and cited the sources, it mentioned Wikipedia in a side bar that I trimmed and offered more information at the end, which I declined.
My next questions were: “Can you quantify the amount of electrical energy and air conditioning used to provide this response to my initial question? Also, how much water was needed to cool the equipment, and what becomes of the water used? Please provide any additional costs to give me a total figure.”

My Reaction
The answers AI gave are reassuringly microscopic costs for a query like mine. For example, electricity needed to answer my first question cost “a tiny fraction of a cent.” Also, water consumption for a brief text reply is calculated at “10 to 100 drops.”
Beyond these specifics, I admit that I was blown away by the amount of information. Not only do I not want to go deeper into the accounting, I also was happy to quit with the reassurance that AI seems frugal with both money and resources. But is this an accurate picture? Should we worry that AI is programmed to give an untruthfully favorable account of itself, or am I being paranoid?
Poor Governor Hocul. The New York Daily News reported today (July 28, 2026) that she is putting a hold on construction of new data centers in her state. Her fear is that nearby communities will suffer material harm from the proposed centers. But what’s her pessimism based on, if not the answers AI provides to questions like mine? There is overwhelming evidence that climate change results from human activity, but industrial oligarchs downplay it or blame it on natural factors.
In a typical day, I might used AI a dozen or more times. So, is my bill for the day just a few cents? I hope so, but I doubt it. I use Facebook, Reddit, etc., heavily as places to post articles like this one, and I get lots of views and visitors on my website as a result.
This “collateral damage” is impossible, at least for me, to even estimate. I do the damage because I am self-promoting my book. I try to write interesting and informative articles, ultimately to draw people to my website and sell copies of my book. The option was to pay thousands of dollars to a traditional publisher to do the promoting for me. How about a modest surcharge added to our phone bill for AI usage? I’d be content to pay it.
Another partial remedy is promotion of renewable energy sources and discouragement of the legislative obstacles posed by utility companies.
Meanwhile, what everyone can do is refrain from frivolous (in my subjective opinion) searches, computer games, and other idle online pursuits. Now that the thunderstorms have passed, I’m going for a walk.
